Depot Town Parking Reductions near the Freighthouse

The City of Ypsilanti and the Friends of the Ypsilanti Freighthouse (FOYF) received grant money for the renovation of the Historic Ypsilanti Freighthouse. The renovations are being done in two phases. Phase I of the project includes moderate floor repair, ceiling and soffit repair, foundation stabilization, roof demolition and replacement, and excavation. This work will be completed by Memorial Day 2010. The second phase of the project includes masonry work, north deck renovation, and the reinstallation of the west deck. Phase II will be completed by October or November 2010.

Due to the impending renovation and construction, parking will be reduced in the parking lot adjacent to the Freighthouse and only one-way traffic will be allowed on Market St between Cross and Rice Streets. Specifically, the 14 spaces on the West side of the Freighthouse building will be removed to allow for a staging area the contractor during Phase I of the project. Current two-way traffic lanes will become a 15 feet – 20 feet wide, northbound one-way traffic lane towards Rice St. during construction. Construction will begin on Monday, March 8, 2010.

During the Farmers Market season, Market Street will be closed to through traffic (in either direction) on Saturdays from 6AM – 3PM between the market square and Freighthouse

In an effort to update the community on these efforts, the City is hosting an information session on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers at 1 S. HuronStreet, Ypsilanti Michigan. The meeting will include information and updates on the following:

  • Phase I construction of the Freighthouse
  • Details of phase II construction and expected timelines
  • Information regarding a recent Great Lakes Restoration Iniatiative grant application for storm water improvements to the Frog Island Parking lots.
  • Question and answer session
