City Announces Police Chief Town Hall Meeting
The City’s search to fill the vacant police chief position will include an effort to maximize and diversify the City’s pool of highly qualified candidates. Although the appointment of a new Police Chief is by the City Manager the administration understands this is a high-profile position that will affect the entire community. The search process is designed to ensure that the public is aware of the process and has an opportunity to participate.
In 2006, the police chief search process was very similar and a list of competencies was developed to help in recruiting and hiring a Chief who would fit the City of Ypsilanti community. The City Manager will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the Council Chambers, to solicit public comment about the Police Chief competency model and about the competencies they believe should be a priority or included. Terry McGinn from Career Directions, the consultant hired to assist in the process, will be moderating this session. The list of competencies, and more detailed information will be added below as they become available. You can also see them on the City's Police Department webpage.
City Council will review public comments regarding the competency model and the suggested list of competencies at the September 1, 2009 Council meeting starting at 7:00pm. City Manager, Edward Koryzno, Jr. has also formed a search committee comprised of himself; April McGrath, Director of Administrative Services; Chief Barnett Jones, City of Ann Arbor; Chief Kim Scott, City of Garden City; Executive Director Gregg O’Dell, Eastern Michigan Public Safety Department; and Rod Johnson, Chair of the Ypsilanti Community Policing Action Council. The City Manager plans to have a candidate named by January 4, 2010.
