Cross Street Neighborhood Improvement Plan

The Cross Street Neighborhood Improvement Plan was developed in 2001-2002 by the City of Ypsilanti, Eastern Michigan University, and the Washtenaw Area Transportation Study.  The purpose of the plan was to address challenges facing the neighborhood outlined by West Cross Street and Washtenaw Avenue, from the intersection of those streets to the Huron River.  Concerns included fast traffic flow, a hostile pedestrian environment, property maintenance and ordinance enforcement issues, parking congestion, and a declining commercial area.

Several of the recommendations made in the plan have been implemented, including the addition of on-street parking and a bike lane to Cross Street, the rezoning of many residential properties to lower intensities, and the expansion of the Depot Town DDA to include the Cross Street commercial properties; many recommendations remain for future implementation.
